In advance of the 500-year anniversary of native and Spanish encounters in Mesoamerica, over the next several meetings, the 2017 meeting’s theme—Beyond the Conquest: New Approaches to Ethnohistory of Colonial Latin America—will prioritize works that deal with innovative perspectives on indigenous studies and ethnohistory in colonial Latin America. While we encourage submissions on this year’s theme, proposals on other topics in colonial Latin America will also be given full consideration. We invite English- or Spanish-language proposals from domestic and international scholars at any career stage. Submissions should include an abstract (no longer than three hundred words) and an abbreviated CV (no longer than two pages). A selection of scholars will be invited to participate; the Seminar will cover local housing and meal expenses. Invited participants will introduce their respective pre-circulated works-in-progress (no longer than 10,000 words) and serve as primary commentators for another participant’s work. The eminent Latin American historian Eric Van Young will serve as senior discussant for the 2017 seminar. Please send proposals to theSouthwestSeminar@gmail.com.
