Calling for papers to present at the Latin American Studies Association conference (April 29 - May 1, 2017 in Lima, Peru)

Food and Race in Latin American History

Departing from the research of historians such as Rebecca Earle and Jeffrey Pilcher, this panel seeks to discuss food and foodways from the perspective of race. How racial hierarchies were reproduced and legitimized by cooking and eating practices? In which ways nation-states identified certain foodstuffs with progress and civilization? How did the eugenics and medical discourse reinforced racial structures? Which are the connections between race, gender, class and food? This panel looks at food as a trope of Latin American racial identity/ies and the constant tensions between who we are and who we want to be.

Please send your proposals, including a title and a 250-word description by August 26 to Sandra Aguilar (aguilars@moravian.edu)
