Conventos as Artistic Crucibles in Viceregal New Spain

From the outset, conventos in New Spain were important places for intellectual and artistic production that actively engaged native peoples. Manuscripts and books in native language, featherwork, and other portable media arts have their counterparts in more durable expressions, such as painting, murals, sculpture and architectural decorations. Artists working in conventos – concentrated places of spiritual, educational, and artistic training – produced art that brought together ideas and visual traditions from the indigenous artists and European newcomers. We welcome presentations that seek to connect different artistic output in conventos, from across different regions of early colonial New Spain as they relate to the cultural and historical place of their production in the convent.
